Week 4: September 16-20

“Rages to Riches”

Within the wonderful fairy tale of Cinderella,
her story is primarily a “rages to riches” story through magic and marriage. The heroine goes from being dehumanized from her father and stepmother to marrying the prince. Now as much as we all would love magic in real life, it is simply unrealistic. Within today’s society someone reaching success through marriage can happen but is just not common. People from a lower class does not usually make it out of poverty, it can happen, but it is extremely hard to accomplish that. For example, education. Every profession now requires a degree of some sort. But in order to get that degree you need to go to college but the loans alone to attend the school can cost more than what that profession pays. So, even though you have a degree and a job chances are you are not jumping up social classes. Now this isn’t impossible, if you are looking at some of the wealthiest people on earth like the creator of Apple, Amazon, Netflix and so many other companies. Most come from a lower social class and are not multi-millionaires, now they are the real-life examples of a “rags to riches” story. But not everyone can have a wonderful fairy godmother (Walt Disney Version) and animals to help them get through hard times in their life. Unfortunately, life is not a fairy tale. Going from “rags to riches” is not impossible but it is unrealistic given the amount of luck someone would need to either become very successful or be like Cinderella and marry up in social class.
